We Love (beta)

How we're developing and road-testing a new brand for the tech community.

welove_blogpost

We’ve been running the React London community since 2014 and we’ve had a lot of fun, met a lot of great people and even hosted a conference that people came from all over the world to attend.

So we have something new in the pipeline…

We love lots of cool stuff - frameworks, languages and tools and we know our friends in the London tech community do too - React and all the stuff we talk about at React London is ACE but there’s more to Red Badger than just React.

So… over the next couple of months we’ll be rolling out the Welovetech.london community.

The idea is to host regular meetups, each with a different theme. The theme might be a particular framework or language or it could be something broader like “music and tech”. We are really inspired by the Strangeloop conference in terms of the range of topics they cover, the atmosphere they create and their values, so have used it as our inspiration.

Here is an idea of what we think is important

  1. Inclusivity; everyone is welcome regardless of all of the usual things but also regardless of whether they work in tech or not. A passion for technology is the only prerequisite.
  2. Inspiring rather than just informative.
  3. Passionate, provocative and (o)pinionated.

What’s up first?

Our first theme is Peer to Peer web and was inspired by Viktor’s controversial blog “The end of the cloud: A truly serverless web”. The blog kicked off a big discussion on Twitter which is how we met Paul Frazee. Paul works on a peer to peer browser called Beaker and is employed by Blue Link Labs which runs a public-peer service called Hashbase… and he’s coming over from Texas to talk at our first meetup! You can find out more and register for tickets here.

How can you get involved?

1. Suggest a theme
What would you like to hear about? What is interesting you at the minute? Let us know by dropping us an email at welove@red-badger.com.

2. Offer to speak
Have something to say? Whether you’d like 5 minutes or 30 minutes we’d love to hear your ideas. We are very happy to help you pull your thoughts together, so even if you just have a vague idea of what you’d like to cover, let us know and we’ll talk it over with you. We are really keen to welcome first-time speakers - some of the best talks at the React London meetups have come from people who have never done any public speaking before.

Currently we have pencilled in the following themes:

  • Accessibility
  • Music and Tech
  • Monorepos

3. Suggest a speaker
If you see a theme in the plans and know someone great who could contribute a talk we’d love it if you would send them our way.
